Beyond the Film: Walking Upstream

Once Living Downstream is released, this website will begin to evolve and to grow in earnest. Where the film leaves off – educating and inspiring – www.livingdownstream.com will begin. We believe that this site will help individuals and groups begin thinking about the ways in which they can work for cancer prevention.  There will be something for everyone here – whether you are a cancer survivor, a healthcare professional, a teacher, a student, an activist, or a parent.

After seeing Living Downstream, you will probably ask: What can I do?  The Walking Upstream section of this website will be a highly interactive experience, designed to help you to discover your own answers to this question. It will serve as a repository of individual stories, experiences and perspectives.  It will help you connect with and learn from others who are concerned about environmental links to cancer.  It will provide you with information, inspiration, insight and motivation.

Here are just some of the things we are working on:

Sandra’s Weekly Essay

Once a week, Dr. Sandra Steingraber will post a short essay, specifically written for the site.  Each essay will be a discussion of a quote by a note-worthy thinker and Sandra will artfully link that quote to the issues of cancer and the environment, in her signature writing style.  In addition to Sandra’s essay, this section will also feature information about the origins of the quote and will respond to news-related items.   We will offer users the opportunity to download a widget or subscribe to an RSS feed so you can always be notified when Sandra’s new essays are posted.

Up-to-Date Information

This section will be updated regularly to include information on the latest scientific data and research, changes to public policies for regulating toxic substances, and new applications of the Precautionary Principle in various jurisdictions.  As science continues to learn more about the connections between exposure to environmental toxins and cancer incidence, this section will help you to keep informed.

Notes from the Field

A space for sharing thoughts, ideas and experiences.  This section will promote community engagement by featuring video, photo and text blogs from: the filmmakers, scientists, community activists, cancer patients, and educators.

Take Action

Practical thoughts and ideas that will inspire audiences to envision and create change in their communities by drawing upon their unique needs, opportunities and talents.  This section will also include:

Community Links

Information on organizations and campaigns in your community.

Calendar of Events

Dates and times of everything from film screenings to public lectures and workshops by Dr. Steingraber and other experts appearing in the film.

If you have ideas for: a blog, interview subjects, case studies, action resources, campaign alerts or community links to feature on the site, please contact us.
